Creating Patterns For Background

Here I’m going to show you a few ways how to create interesting patterns for backgrounds.

Ok, starting by creating a new document, sized 300×300 pixels and fill it with any color, for example black.

After that start with creating your pattern. Select the Custom Shape Tool and select one of standard shapes on Photoshop gallery.

Use white color for creating shape.

Rasterize this shape with Layer > Rasterize > Shape. After that get out the Rectangular Marquee Tool to create selection as on my picture below. You have to select ¼ part of flower, this proportion is important for our future pattern.

Then invert selection with Select > Inverse and press Delete to clear selected area.

Ok, now remove selection with Select > Deselect and select Custom Shape Tool to add one more custom shape, which you can see below:

Add shape to the canvas.

Press Ctrl+T and rotate this shape about 45 degrees and move it a little bit below. Hold the Shift button when rotating the shape to get the exact angle of rotating object.

Merge two of these layers together with Ctrl+E and duplicate new received layer with Ctrl+J. Use Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to flip new layer horizontal and move it right.

Ok, merge current layer with previous again and duplicate new layer again. Use Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to flip duplicated layer vertical and move it below. Merge two of these layers together.

Press Ctrl+T to reduce the size of double.

Ok, now we have ready fragment for pattern. After that I will show you two ways of creating pattern, using this fragment.
The first one way. Press Ctrl+A to select all on our canvas and press Ctrl+C to copy selected area. Ok, now use Ctrl+N to create a new document, but before you press Enter, you should add two pixels more to width and height.

Fill created document with color of #003e16 and after that press Ctrl+V to paste copied fragment to this document.

Then mess with the layer mode & opacity/fill. I tried Overlay with opacity of 40%. Then apply Outer Glow layer style to this layer.

You can see the result below:

Apply Edit > Define Pattern to save this picture as pattern and close current document without saving. After that you can create a document of any size and fill it with our pattern using the Paint Bucket Tool.

The second one way. Go back to our main canvas and copy current fragment three more times and arrange it as shown below:

Merge all the layers with fragments in one layer. Then use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to create selection as on my picture below. Pay your attention that the boundaries of your selection must be located directly between the centers of flowers.

Press Ctrl+C to copy selected area. Then create a new document and fill it with color of #003e16 again. Press Ctrl+V to paste copied fragment here.

Set up opacity to 40% again and change layer mode to Overlay. After that apply Outer Glow layer style for this layer.

Ok, apply Edit > Define Pattern again to save this picture as pattern and close current document without saving. After that you can create a document of any size and fill it with our pattern using the Paint Bucket Tool. The result should look as mine:
